Laying New Sod Installation Process
Laying sod is a reasonably straightforward process, but there are a few things to remember to ensure it is done correctly.
The first thing to consider with sod installation is the type of sod that you want to use. Many different types of sod are available, and each has advantages and disadvantages. Before you begin the installation process, you must decide what kind of sod best suits your needs. Once you have decided on the type of grass you want to use, the next step is to prepare the area where you will be laying sod. This means removing any existing grass, weeds, or other debris from the area. It is also essential to ensure the ground is even and there are no high or low spots. Once the area is prepared, you can begin installing the sod. Sod is typically sold in rolls, so you must unroll it and lay it down in the prepared area. Remove any footprints from the soil before laying the sod. It is essential to ensure that there is good contact and that the sod is touching the ground all around, as this will help it take root properly and avoid any air pockets from forming. Once the sod is laid down, you can press it into place with a lawn roller. If all this sounds like too much work, don't worry! We've got you covered! We would be happy to do all the heavy lifting and install fresh new sod for you from the first row to the last! Call us today to schedule your free consultation! Fertilizing, Lawn Mowing & Watering of Fresh Turf
After new turf is installed, lawn care is critical. You must water your fresh grass regularly, especially during the first week. This will help the sod to take root and start growing. You should pour an inch of water at a bare minimum, but ideally, you should aim for 3-6 inches. Once the new grass has taken root, you can begin mowing, edging, and caring for it just like any other lawn.
It is a good idea to add a starter fertilizer that contains a good amount of phosphorus to your new turf at least 30 days after its installation. Wait at least 3-4 weeks before you add any herbicide. If you want to be extra cautious of your new lawn, you can also perform a soil test and measure your soil's ph level. Opinions vary on the recommended ph range. Typically a range between 5.5 and 7.5 is recommended. If your soil's ph level is low, consider adding lime to your soil. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How much does it cost to replace sod and install new sod in my yard?
The cost of installing new sod largely depends on how many square feet you need to sod. The larger the area, the more sod you need and the higher the cost. Fortunately, we would be delighted to provide you with a free estimate so you can plan ahead of time. To book your free consultation, contact us now. Once booked, we will measure the area you want sodding to occur in, and we will calculate your free quote based on the cost per square foot.
Do I need to remove all of the existing grass first before installing new sod?All current grass and weeds should be removed before installing new sod. We also recommend digging at least 3 inches down and replacing old soil with new topsoil. You can use a sod cutter to remove old grass quickly. A shovel is also effective but may take longer.
How often do you water new sod? Is using a sprinkler okay for watering new sod?
The first few weeks of your new sod lawn will be critical, so you must water your fresh grass at least twice daily. The best time is in the morning and evening. We recommend at least 20 minutes of watering per session. Consider installing an irrigation system or a sprinkler if you have a busy schedule and cannot water your lawn for at least 20 minutes twice a day. If you want to build an irrigation system, you can buy all the items you need, such as tubes and sprinkler heads, from your local Home Depot or garden center.
How long does it take for new sod to take hold?
It takes about 14 days for shallow roots to form and around a month for deep roots to emerge. Because roots are being developed within the first month, avoiding foot traffic and using a lawn mower on your new sod is best until it is firmer.
Do you recommend using topsoil before installing new grass?
Topsoil is one of the soils we recommend you can use before you lay sod.
When will seams (gaps) disappear from my new lawn?
Typically seams disappear within 4-6 weeks.
If leaves provide nutrients to my lawn do I need to rake leaves off my new grass in the Fall? While it is true that leaves provide nutrients and are a form of compost and organic matter for your grass, we recommend you speak with your neighbours if they are okay with you not raking your yard. We do not want to be responsible for any neighbourly complaints.
When should I add fertilizer to my new grass?
Homeowners should consider adding fertilizer at least a month after new turf grasses have been installed.
Where can I buy new sod from?
We recommend buying a pallet of new sod from a local sod farm near you. We recommend measuring your lawn's width and height before buying sod so you don't buy too little or are left with excess sod rolls.
